Newport, RI; February 01, 2014—The Newport Music Festival 2014 will celebrate its 46th season July 11–27, continuing the tradition of presenting unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world-class artists and special events in the Gilded Age “summer cottages” of Newport, Rhode Island. The Festival researches and selects works from the 19th century chamber music, vocal repertoire and the Romantic-era piano literature, to create one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world. In its forty-five year history, the Newport Music Festival has become celebrated for presenting over one hundred thirty artists and ensembles in their American debuts. Yamaha Pianos celebrates its 27th year in partnership with the Festival as its major sponsor.
In all, 60+ concerts are scheduled with music ranging from Bach to Bernstein—three to five per day—in multiple locations, including the famous Newport Mansions. There will be concerts of chamber music favorites and programs of ragtime and tango, along with a few surprises. A season-long tribute to the 150th anniversary of German composer Richard Strauss will feature several concerts of his enduring music. The Strauss Series will include piano, chamber and vocal works, including several rarely performed transcriptions. Some 80 musicians from 18 countries will participate, creating an international group of resident artists. Many will be familiar, but a record 30 musicians will make their Newport debuts, joining what the Festival terms its “family of artists.”
Swedish Tenor Joachim Bäckström will make his American recital debut July 16th; Spanish percussionists Rafael Gálvez and Juan José Guillen will also make their American debuts. Czech pianist Terezie Fialová, English pianist Tim Carey, American pianists Chad Bowles and Richard Glazier, the Hevreh Ensemble and Theatre Street Productions will all make their Newport debuts. Hungarian pianist Gergely Bogányi will open the Festival on July 11th, Australian pianist Piers Lane will present a recital on July 14th, and American pianist Frederic Chiu celebrates his 20th anniversary season at the Festival with a recital on July 17th.
Other recitals include Czech cellist Jiří Bárta with pianist Terezie Fialová, Tchaikovsky Competition gold medalist Sergey Antonov with pianist Bernadene Blaha, and Italian cellist Luigi Piovano. The Ecclesia Consort, directed by Pierre Massé, will present an afternoon of French music including the Fauré Requiem, Latitude 41 will make a return appearance, the Hevreh Ensemble will make their Newport debut, along with the saxophone-based Asylum Quartet and Theatre Street Productions. The Closing Concert will feature a two piano, two percussion ensemble extravaganza.
Morning concerts are at 11 a.m., afternoons usually at 4 p.m. and evenings at The Breakers, the queen of the Newport Mansions, at 8 or 9 p.m. The Festival was designated a “Fodor’s Choice” in the 2013 Fodor’s New England guide, and chosen one of the “Top Music Festivals 2010” in Sky magazine, the in-flight publication for Delta Airlines. It has also been named one of the “America’s Elite 1000—the Ultimate List,” the very best American luxury goods, shops, services and special events.
