Composer Series

The popular retrospectives of major composers continue with the 2003 Composer Series.  This season, twenty-four afternoon programs will be devoted to the complete chamber music, piano masterpieces and songs, both well known and rare, of two of the 20th Century’s most creative minds—Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev and French composer Francis Poulenc.  Though perhaps overshadowed by some of their more famous countrymen, these two composers epitomize neo-Romanticism and share a unique place in 20th Century chamber music.  ### individual pieces of their music will be performed, including the solo piano pieces, transcriptions for other instruments, chamber works and songs, as well as the piano concerti for two pianos.

Concert Cruises on Narragansett Bay

Enjoy a Festival tradition on the Bay Queen’s Vista Jubilee for two splendid Narragansett Bay concert cruises, departing the dock at Goat Island Marina Mondays on July 14 and 21 at 11 am sharp, until about 2 pm.  The cruises feature a recreation of one of Dr. Malkovich’s favorite recordings “The Art of Youra Guller, Legendary Pianist” and the return of Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz.  As always, the concert includes a sumptuous Champagne Louis Roederer buffet lunch with magnificent Narragansett Bay as the backdrop.  Tickets are $48 per person.

Debuts and Recitals

This year eighteen artists will make Festival debuts, with four North American debuts, continuing the tradition of presenting artists in their American debuts dating back nearly thirty years and 125 artists.  World-renowned Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomšič will open the Festival with her unparalleled artistry for a record third time at the Opening Night concert on Friday, July 11th.  The improvisational genius John Bayless will return to the Festival for a program of his unique piano transcriptions of popular composers, operatic arias and audience requests on Saturday, July 12th.  Sensational Georgian soprano Eteri Lamoris, who is being hailed as a world-class soprano, will make her North American recital debut Sunday, July 13th.  The exciting young Hungarian pianist Gergely Bogányi will also make his North American debut on Wednesday, July 16th.  Swedish clarinetist Carl-Johan Stjernström makes his North American debut performing in fifteen concerts.  The Connoisseur Concert on Friday, July 18th will feature Naaman Sluchin, a young Israeli/French violinist and winner of the First Uralsk Violin Competition held in Kazakhstan last February.  Renowned Kazakhstan violinist Marat Bisengaliev makes his American recital debut on Saturday, July 19th.  Legendary American pianist Earl Wild makes his Festival debut highlighting the annual Festival Gala at Rosecliff July 24th (see next page).  Georgian pianist Manana Doidjashvili, Rector of the Tbilisi Conservatoire, makes her American recital debut on Thursday, July 24th.  Concerts not to be missed!

For those music lovers who appreciate alfresco dining in spectacular outdoor settings, the Festival offers back-to-back box lunch and buffet luncheon concerts.  Friday, July 18th at the Newport Regatta Club on Goat Island features a presentation entitled “Conductors’ Corner,” little known works by well-known maestros, followed by the 1 pm box lunch or optional box lunch, and then the 2 pm “Composer Series” concert.  On Thursday, July 24th it’s a seaside doubleheader on the lawn of magnificent Rosecliff mansion.  At 11am it’s “Olé! Olé!!,” a program devoted to Spanish composers—at 1pm come early for your box lunch and the “Composer Series” concert at 2 pm, featuring Poulenc’s Wind Trio.  Concerts are at 11 am followed by lunch or optional lunch at 1 pm prior to the 2 pm concert.  The box lunches and buffet are included in the price of your ticket for the morning concerts and is optional for the 2 pm concerts.  Tickets are $45 per person for mornings, $35 (without lunch) and $45 (with lunch) for afternoons.  Get your tickets to these concerts early, for they’re sure to be sell-outs!
