A
Welcome to the 44th
Season
Dear Music Lovers,
A festive welcome to
the 44th season of
the Newport Music
Festival. I used to
like to tease my
father when every
year he proclaimed
that season to be
“the best ever.”
Looking back, I know
he was right—every
season was uniquely
crafted, and with
its own “feel” and
individual
excellence. This
season I am happy to
continue that
tradition and
proclaim the 2012
Newport Music
Festival as “the
best ever.”
This season the
Festival again
offers a wide
variety of 61
chamber music
concerts that will
delight and entice
you. The music of
Claude Debussy is
presented in depth,
in honor of the
150th anniversary of
his birth. This
sesquicentennial
celebration includes
20 “Debussyad”
concerts, one of the
most articulate and
comprehensive
celebrations of this
milestone in the
world. Debussy is
among the most
important of all
French composers,
and considered one
of the
revolutionaries who
ushered in the
modern era in
Classical Music. My
thanks to Music
Advisor Carlo Grante
for his artistic
expertise in helping
to craft these “Debussyads.”
The Opening Night
concert features the
American recital
debut of Italian
violinist Grazia
Raimondi, who
performs Vivaldi’s
masterpiece The
Four Seasons.
There are recitals
galore with pianists
Roberto Plano,
Frederick Moyer,
Agustin Anievas,
Carlo Grante, Claire
Huangci and
13-year-old Nadia
Azzi; Grammy-winning
mallet percussionist
Dave Samuels shares
his unique skills at
The Breakers coupled
with a gala cocktail
reception to benefit
the Mark P.
Malkovich Memorial
Fund; Tchaikovsky
Competition
gold-medal cellist
Sergey Antonov
returns in a
scintillating
program with pianist
Bernadene Blaha;
super-fiddler Eugene
Tzikindelean takes
aim at “The King of
the Violin” Eugène
Ysaÿe; international
opera star Madelyn
Renée closes the
Festival on a high
note with music from
the Belle Époque and
a world premiere
work by
pianist/composer
John Bayless. Many
of your favorite
musicians will
return, along with
several incredibly
talented, first-time
artists.
A children’s concert
on July 14 kicks off
pianist Frederic
Chiu’s popular
“Classical
Smackdowns,” where
the audience votes
for its favorite
composer. Rounding
out this memorable
44th season are
special concerts at
The Portsmouth Abbey
School and, for the
first time, at
beautiful Blithewold
Mansion in Bristol,
RI. Eight world
premieres and six
American premiere
compositions will be
heard this season,
certainly a record
for Newport. Two
“Morning Mozart”
concerts and
programs devoted to
composers
Mendelssohn, Brahms,
Chopin and Piazzolla
showcase their
special works.
I join President
Diane Hurley and the
Board of Directors
in extending our
sincere thanks to
the Preservation
Society of Newport
County for the use
of their magnificent
Newport Mansions
these many years.
Our appreciation to
the International
Tennis Hall of Fame
and Salve Regina
University for the
beautiful Stanford
White Casino
Theatre, CrossPoint
Church, the Newport
Art Museum, Saint
John the Evangelist,
and Newport Grand
for their always
sparkling venues.
Many thanks to all
the artists for
their assistance and
cooperation in
making this season
“the best ever.” We
look forward to
sharing it with you.
